I am a historian of modern Europe and modern China. I am broadly interested in global history, the transnational connections between modern Europe and modern East Asia, the history of religion, and the history of medicine.
Born in the United States, I grew up in Hsinchu, Taiwan. After graduating from high school in Taiwan, I studied history at Columbia University in New York City. After studying German in Berlin, I pursued a doctorate in history at the University of California, Berkeley. I received my Ph.D in 2013, and I have been teaching at the American University of Paris since then.
I am married to the wonderful Michelle Kuo, a writer, teacher, and attorney.
