I am a historian of modern Europe and modern China. I am broadly interested in global history, histories of imperialism, the transnational connections between modern Europe and modern East Asia, the history of religion, and the history of medicine.

Born in the United States, I grew up in Hsinchu, Taiwan. After graduating from high school in Taiwan, I studied history at Columbia University in New York City. After studying German in Berlin, I pursued a doctorate in history at the University of California, Berkeley. I received my Ph.D in 2013, and I have been teaching at the American University of Paris since then.
