I am a historian of modern Europe and the world. I study the transnational interactions and connections between Europe and East Asia from c. 1800 to the present. I am broadly interested in the histories of imperialism, religion, and medicine.
Born in the United States, I grew up in Hsinchu, Taiwan. After graduating from high school in Taiwan, I studied history at Columbia University in New York City. After studying German in Berlin, I pursued a doctorate in history at the University of California, Berkeley. I received my Ph.D in 2013, and I have been teaching at the American University of Paris since then.
